Description
The trend is clear: mentoring has moved away from being an exclusive, intensive,
one-on-one, long-term relationship between two people toward having a diverse
network of advisors to support different aspects of one’s career development.
The traditional mentor/protégé relationship is much less effective in the current
business environment because of the mobility of individuals, pace of business,
complexity of careers, and level of effort for organizations to match and support one-on-one mentoring. While one-on-one relationships are effective for many, having multiple relationships is well-suited to today’s work environment and more easily
implemented by organizations. This structured program uses one or two leaders
to guide the career development of up to twelve women, lays the foundation for
their self-directed career management and is perfect for use by women's networks, affinity groups and employee/business resource groups.
The Mentoring Circles Program for Women is a self contained and sustainable
peer mentoring program for early- to mid-career women that meet for two hours at
four to six week intervals for about one year for networking, skill-building, and career
support. Groups should be no larger than eight to twelve women. Additionally, the
program includes a self-directed career component in which participants develop a
personal career plan and identify a unique team of advisors to support them.
The goals of the program are to:
- Provide mentoring, skill-building, and networking opportunities for early- and mid-career women
- Create a peer network that helps women build self-confidence as well as personal and professional effectiveness
- Promote self-directed career management through a Personal Board of Directors
- Provide leadership opportunities for the senior women who guide the groups
The program includes a scripted guide for each session and includes a 60-minute
professional development component; forty minutes dedicated to peer coaching on
business issues and 20 minutes on networking, planning, and session feedback.
Assignments include reading and exercises designed to prepare each individual to
fully engage in each session.
